INSTRUCTIONS: MARYLAND RESIDENT INCOME TAX RETURN (Form 503)

Maryland residents may use the short-form form 503 state income tax return provided if they answer "no" to 14 question located at the bottom of the second page. Check to make sure you are eligible before filing this document, found on the website of the comptroller of Maryland.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 1: At the top lefthand corner of the first page, give your name and Social Security number, as well as that of your spouse if filing jointly.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 2: Enter your present street address, city, state and zip code. Give the name of the county in which you resided on the last day of the taxable period, as well as the city, town or taxing area.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 3: Check the box next to your filing status.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 4: Document all exemptions you are claiming where indicated.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 5: On lines 1 through 5, document your total wages and income as directed.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 6: Consult the tax table in the separate instructions booklet and enter your tax on line 6. If you are claiming an earned income credit or poverty level credit, enter it on line 7.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 7: Subtract line 7 from 6. Enter the difference on line 8.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 8: Compute your local taxes as instructed on lines 9 through 11. Enter the sum of these and your Maryland state tax on line 12.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 9: Voluntary contributions should be entered on lines 13 through 15 and added to the total on line 12 on line 16.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 10: Document taxes withheld from wages and any refundable earned income credits on lines 17 through 19.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 11: Calculate your balance due or refund owed on lines 20 through 23.

Maryland Resident Income Tax Return 503 Step 12: If owed a refund which you wish to receive as a direct deposit, give your bank account information on line 24. Sign and date the form, along with your spouse if filing jointly.
