INSTRUCTIONS: TEXAS APPLICATION FOR RESIDENCE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION (Form 50-114)

Texas residents who wish to claim a state tax exemption on their place of residence may file a form 50-114. This is an application seeking a residence homestead exemption. This form should be filed in the appraisal district in which the property is located. The document is available on the website of the state comptroller.

Texas Application For Residence Homestead Exemption 50-114 Step 1: On the first page, enter the name of your appraisal district, your phone number and full address.

Texas Application For Residence Homestead Exemption 50-114 Step 2: Step 1 asks for the year you are seeking an exemption for, the date you began living on the property in question as your primary residence, and whether you own this property.

Texas Application For Residence Homestead Exemption 50-114 Step 3: Step 2 asks for information about all owners of the property in question. Attach additional sheets as necessary to include all names, addresses and other identifying information requested.

Texas Application For Residence Homestead Exemption 50-114 Step 4: Step 3 asks you to describe the property for which you seek an exemption, including the legal description and appraisal district account number if known. If the property in question is a manufactured home, include the make, model and identification number, as well as the appropriate affidavit.

Texas Application For Residence Homestead Exemption 50-114 Step 5: Step 4 requires you to check the box next to any exemptions you are claiming. In addition to the general homestead exemption, you may also claim a disabled person exemption, an age 65 or older exemption, a surviving spouse of someone 65 or older exemption (an affidavit must be completed to establish this) and a 100% disabled veteran exemption or the surviving spouse of someone who qualifies for this status. Indicate with a check mark if you wish to transfer a school tax limitation from your last home.

Texas Application For Residence Homestead Exemption 50-114 Step 6: Step 5 notes that you must include a copy of your driver's license or state-issued ID, as well as a copy of your vehicle registration record. If you do not own a car, an affidavit is included which you should file stating this.
