INSTRUCTIONS: NEW MEXICO PERSONAL INCOME TAX (Form PIT-1)
New Mexico residents can use a form PIT-1 to pay their state income tax. The document can be obtained from the website of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. If you must later file an amended return, this is done using a form PIT-X.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 1: If you are not filing on a calendar year basis, enter the beginning and ending dates of your fiscal year at the top of the page.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 2: Give your name and Social Security number where indicated. Also note if you are blind or 65 or older. Indicate if you are a state resident, non-resident, first-year resident or part-year resident. If you file your taxes jointly with your spouse, give the same information for them as well.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 3: Write number of exemptions you are seeking on line 2. If you have obtained a federal or state filing extension, write the date up to which you received an extension on line 3.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 4: Check the box next to your filing status in box 4.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 5: Give the names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of all dependants in box 5.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 6: Enter your federal adjusted gross income on line 6.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 7: Follow the instructions on lines 7 through 19 to calculate your net New Mexico income tax owed.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 8: At the top lefthand corner of the second page, enter your Social Security number.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 9: Follow the instructions on lines 20 through 29 to calculate your total tax due.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 10: If filing late, compute your penalty and interest due as instructed on lines 30 through 34.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 11: If you have previously overpaid, complete lines 35 through 38 to determine the amount of the refund you are owed. If you wish to receive this as a direct deposit, enter all account number information requested.
New Mexico Personal Income Tax PIT-1 Step 12: Sign and date the form.
