Those who must pay
estate tax on the value of an estate left by an American decedent should file a form 706. This document is found on the website of the Internal Revenue Service.

Tax Return 706 Step 1: Provide all requested information about the decedent and estate
executor on lines 1a through 10 of Part 1.

Tax Return 706 Step 2: To complete lines 1 and 2, you will first need to complete Part 5, located on the fifth page. Line 12 of that section is transferred to line 1 here, while the value of line 22 there is transferred to line 2 here.

death tax deduction on line 3b. Subtract this from line 3a and enter the resulting difference on line 3c. This is your taxable estate value.

liability by the value of adjusted taxable gifts made from 1977 onwards on lines 4 and 5 as instructed.

United States Estate (And Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Return 706 Step 8: Subtract the value of line 15 from the value of line 12 and enter the resulting difference on line 16. This is your net estate tax due.
