INSTRUCTIONS: UNIVERSAL OHIO STATE, COUNTY AND TRANSIT SALES TAX RETURN (Form UST 1 Short)

Ohio businesses must file a tax return concerning their sales tax owed and paid on a monthly or semi-annual basis. This article discusses the UST 1 tax return in its short version, which is for businesses which do not make accelerated sales tax payments. The form can be found on the website of the Ohio Division of Taxation. This form must be filed even if you have no sales to report or tax due.

Universal Ohio State, County And Transit Sales Tax Return UST 1 Short Step 1: At the top left of the form, enter your vendor identification number, tax identification number and the date on which your return is due.

Universal Ohio State, County And Transit Sales Tax Return UST 1 Short Step 2: Below this, enter your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) or Social Security number and indicate by filling in the appropriate oval whether you file monthly or semi-annually. Give the starting and concluding dates of your filing period.

Universal Ohio State, County And Transit Sales Tax Return UST 1 Short Step 4: Enter the total of your gross sales on line one and the total of your exempt sales on line two. Subtract line two from line one to determine your net taxable sales on line three. Enter the total of all sales on which tax was paid to a clerk of court on line four. Subtract this from line three and enter the total on line five. This will give you your reportable taxable sale.

If business locations are in more than one county, use the chart at the bottom of page one to determine your total liability. Follow the instructions on lines seven and eight to arrive at your final amount due on line nine.
