INSTRUCTIONS: NORTH CAROLINA APPLICATION FOR BUSINESS PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION (Form AV-12)

There are eight types of property for which a North Carolina business can file a form AV-12 application seeking exemption from property tax. These are documented in the Georgia state code numbered 105-282.1. A copy of this statute is included with the AV-12 application to be filed in such instances. The document can be found on the website of the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

North Carolina Application For Business Property Tax Exemption AV-12 Step 1: At the top of the page, enter the tax year in which you are filing.

North Carolina Application For Business Property Tax Exemption AV-12 Step 6: Eight categories of property are listed which are eligible for a property tax exemption. Check the box next to the statement or statements describing your property. The categories are imported property being held at a seaport, special nuclear materials, property used for pollution abatement or recycling, a motor vehicle chassis temporarily in the state for the purposes of having a body mounted upon it, property being held in a foreign trade zone, cargo containers used in ocean commerce, tangible property shipped into the state for repair by an owner residing in another state, or advances on farm products granted by an American government agency or cooperative marketing association.

North Carolina Application For Business Property Tax Exemption AV-12 Step 8: The owner of the business or their authorized representative must sign and date the form, as well as providing their job title and telephone number.

North Carolina Application For Business Property Tax Exemption AV-12 Step 9: Once approved, this application will take effect permanently. You must only file another application if ownership of the property changes or there are additions to it.
